Internal Research Capacity Training: Research Ethics and Governance

The Centre for Tropical Diseases and Global Health (ICTDGH) at the Catholic University of Bukavu will host an online training session on Research Ethics and Governance, presented by Dr. Hugues M. Cakirwa. Responsible research requires careful attention to the people it involves and the communities it serves. This session will provide an opportunity to reflect on ethical principles in research, including respect for participants, informed consent, confidentiality, and the responsible use of data. It will also consider the role of governance in supporting accountability and sound decisions throughout a research project.

The discussion will be particularly relevant to researchers working in clinical and public health settings, where ethical questions can arise at every stage, from study design and fieldwork to the communication of findings. Participants will be encouraged to consider how these principles apply in their own work.

Dr. Cakirwa is an early-career physician and public health researcher specializing in emerging infectious diseases, clinical research, and disease surveillance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His work includes health-system quality improvement, field coordination, data management, and multidisciplinary and multicountry collaboration.

The session will form part of ICTDGH’s Internal Research Capacity Training program, which aims to strengthen the skills needed to conduct responsible, useful research.
